Filed under the “news to me section” would be Vancouver’s Fruit Tree Project Project
I had no idea… It’s such an elegantly simple idea to “redeploy” food that might otherwise by left unharvested.
“The Fruit Tree Project, founded in 1999, is a community initiative which operates across Vancouver neighbourhoods, from boundary to UBC; downtown to Marpole. Our idea is simple: we build communities and strengthen food security using local backyard fruit. We connect people who have excess fruit from their backyard fruit trees with those who have the time and energy to harvest it. Most of the harvested fruit is donated to community organizations and individuals in need. We also are partner with Community Kitchens and other local organizations that use the fruit in educational programs, such as the importance of fresh produce in a healthy diet, canning workshops, and other food security activities.”
